Big Hero 6 beats Interstellar at the Box Office Hollywood

As expected, both the new movies open with around 50 million. but what was surprising is that the animation one beats the Christopher Nolan one. though if we consider box office history that's not a big surprise. this is the fourth time two movies open with more than 50 million and the animation one always leads the pack.

Disney animation's big hero 6 opened with 56 million which is the second highest opening for the studio. the film easily beats wreck-it-Ralph's 49 million opening as well as this year's highly anticipated How To Train Your Dragon 2. though it's miles away from last November's Frozen, that's not a big problem for an original animation film. all credits goes to Disney for making an easily accessible, broadly appealing film from an obscure material. they marketed the movie as a mashup of action and fun and that's virtually paid off as 72 percent of the audience is family. with strong word of mouth, the film will continue to hold strong and a total north of 200 million will be a healthy total unless it is crushed by DreamWorks Penguins of Madagascar.

Adding two it's two day Imax only run Interstellar earned 52 million through five days. for an original sci-fi that's a pretty impressive start, but when you consider that this is a big budget Christopher Nolan film with huge hype and a strong cast, its merely a good start. in comparison last year gravity opens with 55 million and that was considered a tougher sell considering its entire space set up and lack of character. this also sales in comparison to Nolan's last original film inception which opened with 62 million. the mixed reviews can be attributed for the under performance of this movie, with 72% rotten tomatoes score this is the worst reviewed film of the director. more than that the online community start to dig the film even before it reach the theater. another point is the marketing that failed to reach the younger crowd. considering it's older audience and strong Imax number it's entirely possible that the movie will hold strong like gravity or inception.

The good news for the film comes from the overseas market where it opens with a huge 80 million. this includes all of the major market except China and Japan. apart from the two new releases, rest of the chart is pretty unimpressive with gone girl jumping back to the third position on its sixth weekend and Ouija sliding just 44%. both the title earns 6 million each respectively.
