The hunger games : Mockingjay part 1 was supposed
to earn less in its opening weekend than its predecessors, but few
expected it to drop so much. the film's $123 million opening is a
significant 22 percent below
the $158.07 million start of last year's
Catching Fire and 19 percent below the
$152.54 million start of 2012's The
Hunger Games. still this is not an awful start altogether, since it
easily beats transformers 4's $100 million opening to become the
biggest opener of this year. on the weekend forecast we have already
discussed the reason behind such insane drop, but it looks like finally
audiences are really tired of split
stories and split finales. the lack of any arena games also largely make
people to avoid this one and waiting until the word of mouth spreads
which is not as strong as the previous installments as proved by its
average rotten tomatoes score.
last but not least, mockingjay doesn't have any Imax screens to boost
its revenue from those expensive theaters.
Though it under performs in the domestic market, lions gate need not to worry much since the film opened with $152 million from its overseas market which is a 10% improvement over catching fire and is sure to cross that film's overseas number.
Coming to the second place big hero 6 hold of the spot with a 42 percent
drop. its $20 million third weekend is higher than 2012's wreck it
Ralph and just like that film it will also have to face a strong
competitor as DreamWorks penguins of Madagascar is opening on Wednesday
as part of an extended thanksgiving holiday.
Interstellar once again take the third spot, though it drops more than big hero 6. the film earned $15 million and totaled 120 million through 17 days. last weekends champion dumb and dumber to drops to the fourth spot with $13 million second weekend and a massive 62 percent drop. the mixed word of mouth finally paid off and considering horrible bosses opening on Wednesday, it will probably miss the 100 million mark.
