Its almost the end of the year and also the end of Bollywood movie calendar. But there are few good news for the entire industry. For the first time in almost 12 years the cumulative yearly total is lagging behind its previous year. Last year Bollywood has seen four films that earns more than 190 crore and this year there's just one. Yes, you hear it right. Kick is the only universal hit of 2014. Definitely, there is also some huge grosser like Happy new year, Bang Bang. But still they didn't perform on the same level as the industry and trade were expecting.
So everyone is looking at PK as the game changer.
The Aamir Khan, Anuska Sharma, Sanjay Dutt and Susant Singh Rajput starring movie is entering the theaters on Friday and will get almost three open weeks and a very lucrative Christmas season. As one of the most anticipated film of the year, the expectation is sky rocketed. But is it justified? should we expect a 300 crore lifetime number from such a content based film that doesn't have any usual masala flavor or any hit song. Fortunately the answer is yes.
From the marketing and the music at least PK can be compared with 'Jai Ho'. The Salman Khan film that underperformed at the box office this year. But what differentiate this one is one name, Rajkumar Hirani. The director is probably the most trusted name in B-Town. All of his three films from Munnabhai to 3 idiots are outright classic. And the phenomenal advance ticket bookings at the multiplex proves how much people believe in this Jodi.
However the biggest problem for the film is its single screen business. While high end multiplex are guaranteed to do record business its up to those little theaters, whether the film really can break most of the records.
As of now though the opening day record of Happy new year looks safe, Since P K isn't releasing on a holiday. But anything below 30 crore will be regarded as below per.
Also the controversy surrounding the first poster of the film could put off some family audiences. But what if it has the same universal appeal as Hirani's other movies. The sky is the limit than.
