No one expected the new releases to top the penultimate chapter of Hunger games and so does happen but no one expected them to open so low since both Penguins of Madagascar and horrible bosses2 opened below expectation which results in a quieter box office over the usually busy thanksgiving period.
despite it's lower cinema score and critical reviews (hunger games and catching fire both earned A while this one earned A-) Mockingjay held up as well as catching fire. dropping 53%, it earned $56.6 million in its second weekend and $82.69 million over the five-day frame which is the third highest thanksgiving weekend ever. unfortunately the film is lagging behind its predecessor by a whooping 24 percent and will probably wrap up below guardians of the galaxy's 331 million haul.

In a distant second Penguins opens with 25.8 million over the weekend. For the five-day weekend, the movie earned $ 36 million. while all the previous Madagascar movies opened with over 60 million, as a spin off penguins was never expected to touch that figure. still for such a well known characters it's a poor opening. in comparison DreamWorks previous thanksgiving effort 2012s rise of the guardians earned 32 million over the 5day period and was declared a flop. Probably audience weren't interested in it and thought it as a one and half hour tv special of the characters tv show with the identical name. also the stronger than expected hold of Big hero 6 definitely cut off some millions from them since that film drops a mere 7% to earn $18.8 million not too far behind penguins three day gross. but considering the popularity of the Madagascar franchise in the overseas market, penguins definitely will fix up some of its damage from those markets and will remain as a profitable franchise for DreamWorks.

Christopher Nolan's interstellar was even more stronger and miraculously jumped 3% from its previous weekend to earn $15.8 million and a 24 day total of $147 million, the older crowds and Imax screens is helping the film to hold up so strong.

while overseas business will definitely save penguins that's not going to be happened with weekends other new release horrible bosses 2. the sequel of the 2011 film earned $15.7 million over the weekend which is just above the half of the original's $28 million opening weekend. comparing it with other recent comedy sequel title its a complete disappointment.
